NASA JUNO TO FLY CLOSE TO EUROPA

Juno will visit Jupiter's moon Europa. It's planning the closest moon flyby in decades.

NASA detailed plans for the probe's close encounter on Sept. 29.

The unknown intrigues researchers. NASA: "Scientists assume a salty ocean lurks beneath Europa's miles-thick ice cover, raising issues about life."

That's the distance between D.C. and NYC. NASA expects to bring back the highest-resolution moon photos ever.

Juno entered Jupiter's orbit in 2016 and received a mission extension through 2021 to explore its rings and moons.

The spacecraft's equipment will study the moon's icy shell. It will also study the moon's ionosphere and Jupiter moon interactions.
